Second‐Harmonic Generation of Electromagnetic Emissions in a Magnetized Plasma: Kinetic Theory Approach

Second harmonics have been observed in various magnetospheric waves. Although particle simulations are able to produce the similar features as reported satellite observations, exact physical mechanism for generation of second remains uncovered yet. In this letter, we first give wave equations describing fundamental and via multiscale analysis. Then, apply a kinetic theory approach obtain conductivity tensor, nonlinear current density, necessary conditions harmonic electromagnetic emissions magnetized plasma. To verify our theoretical results, also perform hybrid study ion cyclotron waves three cases which deviates from inherent modes by different degrees. Our results suggest important role linear dispersion relation second-harmonic generation.
